"There is now little doubt that the collective actions of people are affecting the earth's climate. It has taken hundreds of years and billions of people to get us to this point. It will take hundreds of years and the cooperation of billions of people to reverse the process and to make the human presence on earth "climate neutral " again. We have the power to do this; the power rests in the policies of governments and the actions of individual people."
Gregory S. Stone, "Ice Island", New England Aquarium
- Demand that your local, state and national governments take actions immediately to mitigate global warming and to make policies to adapt to the realities of our changing climate. We recommend strongly a carbon, instead of a payroll tax that penalizes harmful output and rewards work.
- Demand that your government lead, support and comply with international treaties regarding climate change.
- Support an urgent transition to a clean renewable energy future.
- Reduce, reuse, recycle
- Insulate your home
- Drive less; purchase fuel-efficient, low-emissions cars; combine errands, carpool
- Walk, bike and use public transportation
- Turn appliances, lights, and computers off when not in use.
- Unplug whenever possible, avoiding "phantom" use when chargers, computers, televisions, vcrs, game systems, and the like are turned off
- Drink tap water, not bottled water
- Only use Energy Star approved appliances
- Take shorter showers
- Use cold water for clothes washing
- Eat less meat
- Wear sweaters instead of turning up the thermostat
- Buy organic; local
